Pediatric Injury Study Developing a Health Systems Intervention to Improve Care of Pediatric Injury Patients in Tanzania

Project overview

Injuries are a major cause of death in children worldwide, and children living in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are much more likely to be injured than children in high-income countries (HICs). In caring for injured children in HICs in the hospital, health systems interventions such as care process guidelines have been shown to improve outcomes. Such care process guidelines are not widely adapted in LMICs. The NIH and Fogarty International Center have expressed an interest in training grants focused on advancing emergency care research such as trauma in LMICs. To answer this call, I propose to identify the epidemiology and outcomes of injured children, identify systems barriers and challenges in pediatric trauma care from the family member and medical provider standpoint, and develop an innovative health systems intervention to improve the care of injured children in Northern Tanzania.
