Here are some Frequently Asked Questions for the B.S. and A.B. Major for Environmental Science & Policy:

Can I use AP credits to satisfy co-requisites?

  • AP credits can be used for non-ENV classes (i.e., stats, physics, etc.) as described here: https://trinity.duke.edu/undergraduate/academic-policies/AP-credit-by-department
  • No more than 2 AP credits can be used to satisfy co-requisites in the Major/Minor
  • AP Environmental Science score of 4 or 5 allows students to opt out of ENV102
  • Econ101 can only be waived if the student has 2 AP credits with high test results (macro and micro; ENV21 and 22)
  • We do not currently allow AP credit to be used for the statistics c0-requisites.  We also do not allow AP credit to be used for biology if you are a B.S. major.  However, if the department (statistics, biology) allows you to opt out of the co-requisite course, you may take a higher level statistics or biology course to satisfy the co-requisite requirement

Can I take co-requisite courses S/U?

  • Yes, but if a student already applied 2 AP credits to satisfy core requirements, they cannot take a 3rd core course S/U.
  • A maximum of 2 co-requisite courses can be taken S/U with permission of the Director of Undergraduate Studies.  Students should recognize that courses taken on an S/U basin may not be looked upon favorably by graduate, medical, law or other programs to which students may apply in the future.
  • You CANNOT take any core course, topical course, or focus area course S/U

If I travel abroad, will International Courses satisfy requirements of the Major?

  • Yes, but only one course can be used to satisfy a core requirement (in the B.S.) or tropical area (A.B.).  You must follow Study Abroad Transfer Credit protocol outlined by Trinity.
  • You may also apply one study abroad course to your focus area

Can core (BS) or topical (AB) courses be applied to my focus area courses?

  • If you are a BS major, yes.  If you are an AB major, no

If I am a double major, can courses be applied to both majors?

  • If you are combining the ESP major (BS or AB) with ECS or MARSCI, you cannot apply more than one course to both majors
  • If you are combining the ESP major (BS or AB) with any other major outside the Nicholas School of Environment, double counting is allowed without limitation (i.e., you may apply >1 course to satisfy requirements of the ESP and, say, Economics major)
