Mia Buono
Project Coordinator
Mia is a Master of Science student studying Global Health at Duke University. Working under her mentor Catherine Staton MD, MSc., Mia will conduct her thesis fieldwork in Moshi, Tanzania, at the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre. Her research will focus on evaluating alcohol use disorder and mental health among injury patients. She hopes this project will provide data to develop and incorporate mental health resources into current alcohol-focused interventions in the region.
Mia attended the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where she studied Biochemistry, Molecular & Cellular Biology, and Psychology before starting her graduate education. She has experience in lab and field-based research and is currently focused on developing her quantitative analysis skills. As a GEMINI Research Assistant, Mia works closely with the team on numerous projects focused on mental health, alcohol use interventions, and psychometrics. With a passion for advancing health systems, access to care, and improving global mental health, she hopes to continue her education and research after graduation.
