Anjni Joiner, DO, MPH

Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine

Bio: Dr. Anjni Joiner is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Emergency Medicine at Duke University Medical School. She is board certified in both Emergency Medicine and Emergency Medical Services by the American Board of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Joiner completed her residency in Emergency Medicine at Duke University Medical Center followed by a fellowship in Emergency Medical Services at Emory University. She also obtained a Master of Public Health degree from the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University in Global Epidemiology with a certificate in Complex Humanitarian Emergencies. She currently serves as the medical director for Durham County Emergency Medical Services, providing medical supervision for EMS, 9-1-1 and Fire First responder services for the County.

Dr. Joiner’s research interests involve improving access to care for time sensitive emergency conditions and the development of Emergency Medical Services in low- and middle-income countries. Her work is primarily focused in Tanzania, Brazil and Southeast Asia. In Tanzania, she recently completed an assessment of the emergency care capabilities of Moshi, Tanzania and surrounding areas through community-based surveys, stakeholder qualitative interviews, and hospital-based surveys. Her work in Brazil focuses on using machine learning and artificial intelligence to classify and triage emergency calls. With partners in Singapore, she is currently working on a project to co-develop a prehospital system quality assessment tool for use in 5 different low- and middle-income countries across Southeast Asia.
