Malnutrition is prevalent around the world, in developed and developing countries alike. It can lead to anemia, stunting, wasting and death. Undernourishment can also weaken the immune system, making malnourished children more prone to infection, increasing the risk of enteric diseases. Understanding the relationship between malnutrition and intestinal infections and the consequences of these conditions on various aspects of child development is the basis of the Malnutrition and Enteric Diseases (MAL-ED) program.
