Lapay, a senior at Duke, has spent every summer during his academic career in Durham, finding ways to serve the community. As a volunteer with Root Causes, an effort started by Duke medical students to address food insecurity and other health challenges in Durham, he helps oversee the delivery of fresh fruits and vegetables to people who have difficulty accessing healthy foods. He’s also designed an internship where students work as patient navigators for immigrant and refugee families at a local health clinic. These activities connect closely to Lapay’s academic studies, which focus on health policy and creating access to health services for migrant communities. But he also hopes they offer a model for how students can connect more deeply and meaningfully with the places they live and learn.
