My bright idea

To improve prevention and treatment of alcohol-related accidents in low-resource settings.

Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and Global Health

What I'm doing about it

Staton, an emergency medicine physician and researcher, first saw the impact of alcohol-related accidents while working in Tanzania more than a decade ago. Since then, she has been building a growing partnership to address the problem that relies heavily on two key factors: data and teamwork. Her team launched Tanzania’s first registry of trauma injuries and piloted interventions to help reduce patients’ alcohol use. At the same time, they built a global network of researchers and clinicians to share data and translate strategies that work in other countries. They have also launched a training program to encourage a new generation of trauma-care researchers, part of Staton’s commitment to sustainability and local leadership.
