Sathea Samathi: A Theravada Buddhism-Based Mindfulness, Cognition and Behavior Change Manualized Therapy Protocol Project Lead: Kate Whetten, PhD
Project Overview
Over a three-year period, Duke researchers collaborated with Buddhist monk scholars, Cambodian mental health professionals, youth-serving practitioners, and LGBTQ leaders to develop a 10-week mental health and resilience protocol using a human-centered design approach. This three-tiered, school-based intervention engages youth, caregivers, and school systems. The program integrates contemplative practices with lessons that explore individuals’ connections to family, community, and broader society, while also promoting shifts in thought patterns and encouraging actions grounded in love and kindness.
