Improving the Quality of Inpatient Psychiatric Care and Community Transitions Post-Discharge Project Leads: Brandon Knettel, PhD; Kim Madundo, MD
Project Overview
This study addresses the overuse of physical restraint and involuntary seclusion in the management of psychiatric emergencies across African clinical settings. Due to the lack of infrastructure, training, and workforce to effectively manage psychiatric emergencies, many facilities are left with inhumane and dangerous conditions for both patients and staff. Through a systematic review of restraint and seclusion practices and their impacts, the project synthesizes existing evidence to identify implications for clinical practice, research, and policy. The review draws on firsthand experience witnessing these conditions and describes actionable directions for improving psychiatric emergency care across the continent. Findings are intended to support advocacy for patient rights and the development of safer, more humane alternatives to restraint in low-resource inpatient settings.
