Exploring New Opportunities for the Implementation of mhGAP in Rwanda Project Lead: Brandon Knettel, PhD

Project Overview

In Rwanda there are fewer than 20 psychiatrists for a population of 13.2 million people, and only 0.2% of people newly diagnosed with mental health disorders are treated in Rwandan health facilities. There is an urgent need to scale up the accessibility of mental health services in Rwanda to address this lack of specialized care providers. The WHO’s Mental Health Gap Action Programme (mhGAP) seeks to scale up mental health care services by training non-specialist health care workers in low and middle-income countries (LMICs) to provide care for those with mental, neurological and substance use disorders. This study will identify provider priorities to inform future adaptation and implementation of the mhGAP intervention in Rwanda. In collaboration with the University of Global Health Equity, the mixed-methods research will include an online Delphi survey for stakeholder consensus as well as qualitative interviews with care providers in Rwanda.
