What is Global Mental Health?

Mental health challenges affect people in every region of the world, yet access to effective care remains deeply unequal. Global mental health is the interdisciplinary field focused on understanding these disparities and strengthening systems of care across diverse settings.

The field emphasizes collaboration across disciplines and partnership with communities to develop solutions that are locally meaningful, culturally responsive, and sustainable. At the Duke Center for Global Mental Health, we advance this work through research, education, policy, and practice. We bring together faculty, trainees, and partners across the United States and around the world to reduce mental health disparities and expand access to high-quality mental health care. Across all settings, our goal is to contribute to lasting improvements in mental well-being.
